The Real Reason Willow Married Drew on General Hospital

When Willow agreed to marry Drew (Cameron Mathison) on General Hospital, a lot of us were secretly hoping she had some big, dramatic plan up her sleeve. You know, something like marching down the aisle, slapping him across the face, confessing she shot him, calling him “Double D” as in Despicable Drew, and then walking out like a total boss… or maybe just flat-out saying “no” and leaving him at the altar yet again.

Well… surprise, surprise, Willow did have an ulterior motive for saying “I do.” On the day of her wedding, Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) brought a dress for her daughter, but she also used the moment to try one last time to reach Willow. She encouraged her, saying that if she wanted to back out, they could just walk out of there and call it a day.

But in an emotional moment, Willow admitted that she was going through with the wedding, and not because she loved Drew (thank goodness). She confided in her mom that her ultimate goal was to marry the congressman as a means of survival and, hopefully, finally regain custody of her kids.

Why Willow Married Drew on General Hospital

The Real Reason Willow Married Drew on General Hospital

Of course, this wasn’t exactly the fairytale wedding anyone was hoping for. Willow was also counting on the marriage to eliminate her as a suspect in Drew’s shooting back in September. So, with steely determination, she marched down the aisle, said her “I dos,” and sealed the deal, much to the chagrin of many of the wedding guests.

Even Katelyn MacMullen, who plays Willow, admits that her character’s reasoning has nothing to do with love for the congressman. In an interview with Soap Opera Digest, she explained:

“This isn’t a wedding based on love; it’s a tactic, it’s a strategy. I think Drew and Willow are both getting what they want and need, but it’s not out of real love.”

She added, “She wasn’t doing it out of love for Drew, but she was doing it for love—the love of her children, and believing that this is going to bring her one step closer to being with them. That’s what Willow is fighting for.”

So, were you surprised at Willow’s motive for marrying Drew? Or, like many of us, were you secretly hoping she’d leave him at the altar… yet again?
