Relationships don’t always make sense — nor do they have to. Sometimes things just work and it’s best not to question why. Other times, though, maybe we could all do with a bit more scrutiny! We aren’t just talking about romantic couples, but also friendships, like the one between General Hospital’s Laura and Sonny!
Against all odds, those two have stuck together. But it might be time to put an end to that! For months the show has hammered home how much trouble Laura and Sonny’s friendship causes her and now the two are all wrapped up in a blackmail scheme courtesy of Sidwell. Laura’s worried about how far he’ll push her and her morals, while Sonny and Jason promise that they’ll work together to stop him and get out from under his thumb.

But we’ve all been around long enough to know what that means: This is going to end with Sonny killing Sidwell. And Laura should know that by now, too. Sonny is, as Mac put it to ADA Turner, a violent mobster, and the very fact that he and other mobsters have carved up Port Charles, makes it a magnet for trouble.
If Laura were being honest, she’d acknowledge that Sonny is the one who’s made her compromise her morals. Sidwell’s just apt to push her a bit harder, a bit faster!
Look, the show’s clearly appealing to our sense of history with Sonny reminding Laura of how they joined forces to take down Frank Smith. And just as clearly, Laura’s got a soft spot for Sonny after all those years of history.
But maybe that needs to change. Maybe it’s time for Laura to reexamine their friendship — and cut it loose. She, along with pretty much everyone else, turned on him a bit before, but then went right back to their relationship. That wouldn’t be terrible if Laura wasn’t mayor of Port Charles. But she is.
Laura doesn’t have to make an enemy of Sonny (though as mayor, she really should be focusing on eradicating all organized crime in Port Charles), but she doesn’t have to be friends with him, either. Because eventually, this will bite her in the butt in a way she won’t be able to get out of, with or without Sonny’s help.
