Fire Country’s Reduced Episode Count Still Didn’t Stop It From Beating Yellowstone
Currently, the fourth season of the show is in fourth place, having gained five places in the last couple of days. Marshals, which also serves as the sequel to the Taylor Sheridan-created show, is in fifth place.
Additionally, the first season of Sheriff Country, the spin-off of the firefighter drama, is in sixth place. Despite a leaner production schedule and a recent announcement that left fans reeling, it is commendable how the firefighter drama has managed to outpace a ratings juggernaut franchise like Yellowstone.
Possible Reasons Fire Country Season 4 Beat Marshals

Marshals or just Marshals takes the Dutton ranch saga by focusing on Luke Grimes’ Kayce Dutton. Taking place approximately 15 months after the series finale of Yellowstone, the series follows Kayce as a US Marshal while navigating life on the east camp of the former Dutton Ranch with his son, Tate.
While fans were excited to see Kayce lead the show, many have now been left disappointed. Fans on social media forums like Reddit have pointed out how the show is unrealistic and highly predictable.
Many have also pointed out how the writing lacks gravitas, weight, or even oversight, making the show feel more like a drag than a commitment to storytelling. There are also qualms about the acting, which viewers feel is a result of poor writing and direction. Despite being billed as a high-stakes series, the spin-off eventually falls flat and lacks the original saga.
On the other hand, a show like Fire Country Season 4 honors its previous seasons by raising the stakes and being more grounded. Not only do we see themes like grief and emotional losses being dealt with care, but the action of the show also lands the way it should.
The characters also undergo significant character growth as they navigate the loss of a key member and continue their service. Rather than starting afresh like Marshals, the show leans into its strengths and themes that worked before, while also giving fans more to enjoy.
Being accessible and expanding without damaging its core elements helped Fire Country Season 4 in the best way. If Marshals is to get a second season, it should mend its ways by doing the same.
Why Was Fire Country Season 5’s Episode Count Reduced?
Deadline recently reported that the upcoming fifth season of Fire Country will have 13-episodes instead of the 20 episodes produced in Seasons 3 and 4. The firefighter drama is not alone in getting episode cuts, as NCIS: Origins will also have a reduced third season, as will NCIS: Sydney.
The episode cuts are likely because of the substantial size of CBS’s scripted shows roster next season. Due to the sizeable increase, CBS likely ordered episode reductions to meet budget and reduce risks in the upcoming season.
Yet, the episode cut for Fire Country Season 5 is surprising, given its impressive performance both on charts and ratings. Moreover, it also led to the spin-off, Sheriff Country, which is also performing well on the charts.
Since CBS has added several new shows (three new drama series, Cupertino, Einstein, and NCIS: New York, and one comedy, Eternally Yours), the network may have taken this decision without moving the show from its lucrative Friday night slot.
A 13-episode order will also allow for a tighter and more explosive narrative, hopefully not affecting the quality of the content.
