‘Coming for a While’ – Home and Away Star Lynne McGranger Reveals Real Reason Behind Her Exit and Hardest Part of Saying Goodbye

After more than three decades in Summer Bay, Home and Away legend Lynne McGranger has opened up about her emotional decision to leave the long-running soap. The 72-year-old actress, who played fan-favourite Irene Roberts, revealed that her departure had been “coming for a while” — and that saying goodbye to her co-stars was the hardest part of all.

A Career That Defined a Generation

Lynne McGranger joined Home and Away in 1993 and went on to become one of Australian television’s most enduring stars. Her portrayal of Irene Roberts made her a household name, and she remains one of the longest-serving actresses in soap history.

Speaking on The Late Late Show with Patrick Kielty, Lynne reflected on her incredible career and her reasons for stepping away. “To be honest, Patrick, it was coming for a while,” she said candidly. “I was exhausted. Everyone says, ‘You look so well now!’ and I tell them, that’s what giving up Home and Away does to you. It’s hard work. It’s great fun. But I was working 14-hour days, and I thought, ‘I’m too old for this.’”

Irene’s Farewell

Earlier this year, viewers watched as Irene made her emotional exit from Summer Bay, choosing to travel the world before her Alzheimer’s symptoms worsened. It was a storyline that touched millions, reflecting themes of courage, independence, and acceptance — all qualities long associated with Lynne’s character.

Behind the scenes, though, leaving the set she’d called home for three decades wasn’t easy. “It was hard to walk away from my friends,” Lynne admitted. “But they’re still there. No one’s gone anywhere. I’m still great mates with Ada [Nicodemou], Shane [Withington], Emily [Symons], and Alf, of course — lovely Ray [Meagher].”A woman in an orange and white patterned dress holds her hands to her face, looking distressed.

A Legacy That Lives On

Even after her departure, Lynne remains instantly recognizable to fans around the world. “I might be able to hide,” she joked, “but as soon as I open my mouth, everyone goes, ‘Oh, I know that voice!’”

Her exit marks the end of an era for Home and Away, but her warmth, humour, and unmistakable energy continue to resonate with audiences. Whether through reruns, interviews, or fan encounters, Lynne McGranger’s Irene Roberts remains an unforgettable part of Australian television history.
