ITV soap viewers will know that Cain (Jeff Hordley) was shot by John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) in the Corriedale crossover in January. While receiving treatment at the hospital, the Dales legend learned that doctors had found something abnormal in one of his tests, so they decided to investigate further with a biopsy.

Cain returned to the hospital last month to receive his test results, with the doctor confirming some heartbreaking news – Cain has aggressive, yet localised, prostate cancer.

The village stalwart has only revealed the extent of his diagnosis to his granddaughter, Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill), and his friend and local GP, Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson).

While awaiting his prostate surgery, which has been scheduled for next month, Cain has also had to deal with his wife Moira’s (Natalie J Robb) wrongful imprisonment, as well as Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) trying to take over Butler’s Farm.

During Monday’s (March 9) episode, which is now available to stream on ITVX, Cain spoke to Moira on the phone, but struggled to hear her gratitude over him keeping the farm going in her absence.

As Joe continued to exert pressure, Sarah urged her grandad to finally tell Moira the truth about the farm and his cancer, before the situation unravelled any further.

To make matters worse, Cain soon noticed blood in his urine, so quickly made an appointment to see Liam. The GP confirmed that the symptoms indicated a urinary tract infection, which Cain would likely be more prone to as a result of his cancer diagnosis.

Later, Cain visited Moira in prison to tell her truth about his diagnosis. Moira’s world soon fell apart when her husband revealed the extent of his cancer.

“I wanted to tell you, but you’d just been charged and you weren’t dealing well with it in here. I thought that I could fight it, that I could beat it and you wouldn’t have to know till you got out, but it just hasn’t worked out like I thought it would,” Cain said.

Moira broke down in tears, saying: “So, you have full blown prostate cancer. Are you going to be okay?” with Cain replying: “I don’t know.”

“Cain, I’m so sorry,” a distraught Moira said, before the couple shared an emotional hug. Moira then urged Cain to tell his sons, Kyle (Huey Quinn) and Isaac (Bobby Dunsmuir), as well as the wider family.

A fifth fan echoed the sentiment, saying: “It certainly made me think of life very differently today.” Will Cain finally tell the rest of his family about his ongoing ordeal? We’ll have to wait and see.
