Emmerdale’s Oliver Farnworth ‘rooting’ for Mackenzie Boyd in ‘gripping’ plot
The John Sugden actor admitted that he’s been really invested in the storyline that saw Mackenzie trying to escape the villain
Emmerdale’s Oliver Farnworth shared that he’s been rooting for Mackenzie Boyd as intense scenes of him being held captive aired.
Actor Oliver Farnworth joined Emmerdale last year as John Sugden, an ex-Army medic with a very hidden past. Introduced as Jack Sugden’s long-lost son, John soon developed a close relationship with Victoria Sugden.
He then found himself head over heels in love with Aaron Dingle, the man who used to be married to John’s half-brother, Robert Sugden.
While Aaron was convinced that he’d found a positive love, viewers know that John is a man with many secrets. His “hero complex” has seen him put lives in danger just so he can save them and receive the praise.
However, viewers will recall that John’s desperate need to be seen as a good person meant that he accidentally killed Nate Robinson.
He managed to pin the blame on Owen through a carefully crafted suicide note, but as he prepared to leave with village with Aaron to stay at his childhood cottage, things took a turn.

Mack had a blazing row with Charity Dingle and decided to go to London for a party. Unfortunately, he never made it to London as he uncovered John Sugden’s link to killing Nate Robinson last year.
Sadly, John was one step ahead and as Mack tried to run away John hunted him down in a vicious attack. Having shot Mack through the chest with a bow, he then smashed a giant rock down onto him after Mack tried to reason with him.
In the episodes that followed, it was revealed that Mack was being held captive in a creepy underground bunker just moments away from John’s childhood home.

John then drugged Aaron hoping that he’d feel “needed” by his husband. Things started to get worse as Aaron kept drinking without realising John had spiked him. As Mack escaped the bunker, John ran to the woods and another intense chase ensued. Aaron, desperate for John’s help stumbled into the woods after him.
Convinced he heard Mack’s voice while in the woods, Aaron later questioned John who came up with a quick excuse. Clearly no longer trusting John the same way he once did, Aaron found a phone that John had left in his pocket.
Aaron decided to try and turn on the phone while John wasn’t there. To his surprise, it was Mack’s phone and his face was a picture as he tried to piece together everything he heard the day before.
However, as John threw himself and Aaron off the cliff to pin the blame on Robert, Mack is now left on his own in the bunker.

He shared: “One episode I was really invested in it, ‘come on Mackenzie! Come on, come on Robert, come on Aaron!’ From a John perspective, he’ll always love Aaron, just whether Aaron will love him back.”
Oliver added: “Working with Danny (Miller) day to day is just amazing, just phenomenal. We’ll sit at lunch and we’ll talk about the script, he’s a proper actors actor.”
Emmerdale airs on weekdays at 7:30pm on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
