The Shonda Rhimes creation holds the title of ABC’s longest-running scripted primetime series with 21 years on the air, and it still isn’t immune to budget cuts.

While the show has already seen some adjustments in its latest seasons, with lead Ellen Pompeo stepping back as a full-time cast member in 2022, more changes are expected to fit into the network’s tighter budget.

According to reports, the series will undergo significant casting changes, as the long-tenured cast members, who are among the highest-paid actors on broadcast television, won’t get as much screentime as they did in past episodes.

This means that the veteran stars will only appear in 14 of the show’s 18 episodes per season, although Caterina Scorsone, who portrays Dr. Amelia Shepherd, was reduced to 10 out of 18 in the currently airing Season 22.

However, the budget discussions may lead to airing fewer than 18 episodes, which the show has produced the last two seasons.
