Home and Away Legend Lynne McGranger Finishes Filming, Bids Farewell to Irene Roberts After 33 Years

Long-serving Home and Away star Lynne McGranger has officially completed filming her final scenes as the iconic Summer Bay resident, Irene Roberts, after an incredible 33-year tenure on the Australian soap opera.

McGranger, who is the longest-serving female actor in an Australian drama series, announced her departure earlier this year to pursue her passion for theatre. Her final scenes were filmed in March 2025, though fans could still watch her character on screen for several months, with her final episode airing in August 2025.

The actress, who is 72, spoke about the decision to leave, stating it was “bittersweet” but felt like the right time. She expressed that she was “exhausted” from working 14-hour days and wanted to return to the theatre, where her career began.

The departure of her beloved character, Irene Roberts—known for her warm presence, iconic slang, and tumultuous storylines—is being marked by an emotional, poignant storyline. The show’s writers worked with McGranger to develop a storyline that sees Irene diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease following a series of alarming memory lapses. The character ultimately decides to leave Summer Bay to travel the world while she is still able.

McGranger shared her gratitude, stating: “After almost 33 years in my dream role and working every day with people who I love, respect and whom I now consider family, it’s bittersweet to be closing the chapter on what has been the best and longest gig of my life.” She also praised the writers for their handling of Irene’s exit, which she is “so proud of.”
