Everything you need to know about why Coronation Street and Emmerdale been cancelled in a ITV shake-up

  • Coronation Street and Emmerdale fans are absolutely livid after both soaps got the boot from Friday night telly.
  • ITV’s “power hour” of soaps launched in January with a new schedule – Emmerdale at 8pm and Corrie at 8.30pm from Monday to Friday but the broadcaster has thrown a spanner in the works by bumping both shows on Friday (March 6) for live rugby coverage.
  • The soap shake-up is all down to ITV airing the 2026 Guinness Men’s Six Nations match between Wales and Ireland at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium. Both programmes will return to their usual 8pm-9pm slot the following Monday (March 9).
  • Fans have been left unimpressed about the schedule change on social media. “No Emmerdale or Coronation Street due to rugby,” fumed one viewer on a Coronation Street Facebook fan page. Another added: “I’m so sick of this.” A third disgruntled viewer chimed in: “Put it on ITV 4! Everyone has it!”
  • ITV’s Kevin Lygo previously defended the new “power hour” format, saying it was “viewer-led” and designed to give fans “the most digestible way” to watch their favourite soaps.
