Y&R Casting Shocker: GH Alum Matt Cohen Heads to Genoa City!
Yet another General Hospital alum is making the move to Young and Restless! After hiring Tamara Braun (ex-Carly; ex-Kim) and Roger Howarth (ex-Todd; ex-Franco; ex-Austin), the show is adding Matt Cohen to the cast. The actor began taping his scenes last week and will make his Y&R debut on October 16 in the role of Detective Burrow, Entertainment Weekly reports.
On The Case
Cohen first burst onto the soap scene in 2016 when GH tapped him to play Griffin Munro, a unique multihyphenate of priest and doctor who turned out to be the surprise son of the late Duke Lavery (Ian Buchanan). Among his love interests there? Hayley Erin, who played Kiki and now portrays Claire on Y&R.
The actor exited the show in 2019, telling Soap Opera Digest, “I don’t know when I started thinking about leaving or when I made the decision at all. It just came up that, ‘Oh, wow, these three years that I’ve been here [for the length of my contract] are completed,’ and I was starving creatively to push myself to a place I’ve never gone before… It wasn’t me being bored with the storyline or with the writers at GH or anything like that; it was just, ‘Oh, I did three years here, I don’t want to do another three. I need to do something and then maybe come back. I need to be scared and I need to be thrilled and I need to figure out what I’m made of.’ ”
That same year, Cohen began a stint as a correspondent for Entertainment Tonight while also serving as co-anchor of the series’ weekend show. Before leaving the show in 2023, he won a Daytime Emmy Award for his hosting work.
Outside of soaps, Cohen is also well-known for his starring role as Aiden on South of Nowhere and his multiple appearances on Supernatural, where he portrayed a young John Winchester and archangel Michael.
On Y&R, Cohen’s character will be involved in the investigation swirling around a major case that, according to Entertainment Weekly, involves many of Genoa City’s key players.
